Three of a Perfect Pair

11/12/2009

With apologies to King Crimson for the title, Suspect proudly announces the delivery of a factory matched set of Telefunken USA Model C-12 tube condensor mics. These beauties are exact recreations of the prized AKG C-12 tube mics of the '60s, which sell in the vintage markets between $10,000-$15,000 each. While new to Suspect, the matched set is not exactly "new", as one of the mics is the studio owned Telefunken ELAM-12, a previous verson of the C-12, which was sent to the factory for upgrades (hence the title of this news item). Telefunken USA replaced the tube, capsule and power supply, upgraded the electronics and sonically matched this "new" C-12 with a brand new production microphone, even replacing the cabling so the power supply cables on both mics come from the same spool of wire. Presto, the matched pair of serial numbers 12 and 13 were born.

The studio's ELAM 12 was the best acoustic guitar microphone we've ever encountered, and now having a matched pair for stereo micing is very exciting. As good as that is, the application that these mics excel at is drum overheads/room mics, and that should take the studio drum tones to a whole 'nother level. The truth is as that as room mics, these beauties are oustanding in every application. For more info on the C-12s or any other mic in the studio collection, please drop us a line.
